Web standards are good for everyone

by Rob Mason ~ March 20th, 2007 Filed under: Strategy, Web standards.

According to a recent study (thanks to That Standards Guy for the link), web standards are a good thing, not only for disabled users, but also for able-bodied users. Summarised into one line the article states: “The results support accessible design as universal design, of benefit to all users, independent of disability”.

This is great news for everyone concerned, as it goes to support the widely held view, that web standard compliant sites are a good thing. This business benefits basically translate to (thanks to Accessites for the synopsis):

  • Quicker load times for web pages
  • The kudos of having an accessible site and showing you care
  • It’s the law (if you read the Disabilities and Discrimination Act)
  • Reduced maintenance and update costs
  • Meeting the needs of an ageing population

All make good business sense, so why wouldn’t you?
