Success for a financial adviser website is clarity
by Rob Mason ~ April 2nd, 2008 Filed under: Financial advisers, Useful stuff.
Clarity of voice and clarity of purpose. In other words, know what you want to say and say it in a way that is easy to understand. Clients will thank you and probably give you more business and/or referrals. Even your compliance officer will thanks you for making their life easier to review the content!
All too often however, the tools and services used to power many financial adviser websites don’t allow you to do this. How can you offer clients a suitable online presence if you’re not happy with your own site? If it’s a pain to update, you can pretty much guarantee your clients will think it’s a pain to read and use.
I’m proposing a revolution. Cast aside the old, archaic and down-right unusable systems in place and embrace new and easy-to-use systems instead. You’ll thank me in the long run. For example I use Wordpress as my platform of choice. Why, because:
- it’s easy to setup
- free
- flexible and extensible
- free
- regularly updated and improved
- free
- easy to use
- free
Did I mention it’s free? Offering a content management system (CMS) to financial advisers that requires very little training, virtually no support and is incredibly easy to use just seems like common sense to me. This in turn means adviser’s website can be easy and quick to maintain, whilst keeping the overheads low. Frankly if it’s good enough for CNN, then it should be good enough for you!

Aren’t I cutting my nose of to spite my face somewhat by telling people about the wonders of Wordpress? Maybe a little, but I feel compelled to let financial advisers know that many of the current solutions out there (not all mind you) probably aren’t worth the money, particularly if you have a regular monthly fee but can’t see the value. They have their place, don’t get me wrong, but I feel for the vast majority of financial advisers looking for a website solution, my offering is more than enough.
So cast off the shackles of outmoded, complex and costly website solutions and embrace the future. Make your website clear and concise. Make it easy to update. Give your client’s what they want: easy to digest, trusted information.
