Top web applications of 2008

In an attempt to “discover the world’s most popular web” the chaps at Carsonified launched a not scientific, but nevertheless useful survey at the recent Future of Web Apps conference. The results have been published and the winner is: Gmail.

Googleiscious
Personally, I couldn’t agree more. I use Gmail all of the time for my web work as it’s flexible, easy to use and accessible from anywhere (almost). For what I need, which is basic email stuff, it works very well. Other people no doubt want or need more, but I love it.
Flickin’ love it
Next on the list was Flickr. Another favourite of mine, which I mainly use as an access-anywhere scrapbook. I post snippets of screenshots or website that I like the look of and use it as inspiration for my work. Many a time have I struggled with a design or layout issue, only to find inspiration elsewhere that I’ve tweaked to my needs.
Best in town
At number 6 came the frankly brilliant Wordpress, who are also up for a Webware award. Initially I used Wordpress as a blogging platform for my needs. However, as I’ve explored some more, and broken it along the way, I’ve come to discover a frankly amazing content management system (CMS). So much so, that in all my work with clients who need a CMS I recommend Wordpress. It’s quick to deploy, easy to amend, fully extensible with hundreds of plugins and very easy for the users.
The only other item I have plans to use is Basecamp, an online project management and information sharing system. Basically I plan to start using this to track projects and keep clients up-to-date.
This list could also double up as an answer to “what web apps can I use to run my business?”.
