Paying too much for software?…then this may be the answer

ReadWriteWeb is a site focussed on emerging web trends. One recent article they published looked at web-based applications for students (word processors, note-takers, calculators, etc). Great article that outlines some cheap and free alternatives to “traditional” software (Microsoft, et al).
But the article can also be used for those in a business context. Any of the Microsoft Office replacements they mention are commercial quality, rapidly developing tools that any business would be daft not to look at when considering there next IT spend. Most are online, but once you get over the initial gag reflex around online/offline usage, you come to find yourself thinking “Why the hell should I pay ?200+ when I can get something just as good, if not better, than what Microsoft offer for free?”.
The article then spends some time looking at other areas such as calculators, bookmarking and mind mapping. Some of these are less relevant to a business context but still worth a look as they can come in handy sometimes in brainstorming sessions or general meetings. the calendar section is also particularly well stocked with several free online offerings. Again, get over the online/offline debate and take the plunge. You’ll find fully functioning, easy to use calendar management tools at your finger-tips. The best bit is you can access them from anywhere in he world with an internet connection (even on your phone)!
So next time you think about upgrading to the latest word processing suite from Microsoft or any other large software firm, just consider the alternatives on this list. Even if you don’t choose them at least you’ve thought it through and made an informed choice.
