Death to Internet Explorer 6
by Rob Mason ~ September 29th, 2008 Filed under: Strategy.
Technology moves on and gets better, that’s a fact. However, for some people Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) is the de facto standard for their web browsing, in spite of it being seven years old.
There’s many reasons for this, but it’s mainly to do with age of their machine and familiarity. In short, it works so why change? But there’s many reasons to replace IE6 with newer and better offerings including:
- Security - IE6 is riddled with security holes and vulnerabilities. So much so the US Government issued a warning to people.
- Speed - it’s a system hog, particularly if you’ve got your email client and a word processing program open at the same time.
- Unsupported - it’s officially been cut adrift by Microsoft, meaning no support, no fixes and basically they’ve disowned it.
- Development - any web developer or designer will tell you the headache IE6 gives. It’s buggy, slow and creates an extra overhead for testing and fixing/skirting round issues. In turn this means a higher cost to the end customer.
The reasons to change far outweigh the reasons not to change, so join the movement to ban IE6 to the history books IE Death March.

I too have dropped support on my site for IE 6, and am also listed on the death march. So just know that you are not alone in your quest.
