Latest project: NJP Hosting

It’s time to unveil the latest creation from Sponge Project: NJP Hosting. The brief for the site, run by Nathan a guy I know from over at Web Designer Forum, was simple: dark colours scheme for a new website hosting service, but at no costs must I use images of servers or computers. Hmmm. Cue some serious head-scratching over imagery.

Colours

NJP colour scheme - Dark grey, Orange and a lighter greyI like to keep the dark schemes I do nice and simple, mainly because the contrast between some dark colours is too minimal for anyone to notice. So I ended up only using three colours:

  • Dark grey: #161616 or rgb 38, 38, 38
  • Grey: #262626 or rgb 22, 22, 22
  • Orange: #FC9208 or rgb 252, 146, 8

Layout

The content helped drive the layout, which had a few iterations before the final design was arrived at. Basically having two key hosting options allowed me to fit them onto one page with little hassle. Standard navigation was limited to login, register or contact, so no issues there.

For a bit of fun I thought I’d try out some image replacement. Trebuchet is a nice font, but can get over used and bland if it’s not broken up with something else. So the headings for Extreme and Student used Creative Block and Mainframe, both of which are freebies from the frankly amazing Blambot Comic Fonts website.

Images

Imagery is as important as the content in my opinion, which is why I spent a lot of time searching for suitable images. In the end they’re were right under my nose in the form of the Classic Icon Pack I won via Web Appers.

All in all I’m very happy with the end result.
